My Top 5 Worst Films of 2014

5. A Million Ways to Die in the West
I expected so much more from Seth Macfarlane's follow up movie to Ted. I really wanted to like this movie, but there just wasn't enough laughs to go around. The laughable premise overstayed it's welcome in the first 25 minutes. The cast do what they can with what they got. Liam Neeson looked like he had fun with the role. Overall there just wasn't comedy to keep me interested. I will be looking forward to Ted 2 of course.
                                   MY SCORE: 5.0/10

4. The Expendables 3
The Expendables 3 was terrible. Not only did it completely ignore everything the first two movies did well, it was rated PG-13. The action was lackluster and overproduced. They also excluded most of the cast in return for much younger stars. There were new additions to cast such as Kelsey Grammer, Harrison Ford, and Antonio Banderas. The only one that stood out to me was Mel Gibson. He had a lot of fun with the role I could tell, unfortunately that wasn't enough to make it entertaining for the audience.
                                                                                                                        MY SCORE: 4.5/10

3. Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For
I can't believe I am putting a movie with as much nudity that Sin City 2 has on my "worst of" list. It failed to recapture any spark that the first film had, and it never got off the ground. I was bored the entire way through. I felt the production was lacking in many of the action scenes. The stories for each character were lackluster and uninteresting to watch. Many of the actors seem bored completely and no one really stands out. I wish this film came out like five years ago when there was a little momentum coming off the first movie. Maybe it would have been better. The .2 is for the nudity by the way. Would've been a 4.
                                                                                                                         MY SCORE: 4.2/10

2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
There was a time that I liked Spider-Man. The 2nd film in the rebooted franchise is without a doubt my least favorite Spider-Man film. An overproduced mess with bizarre music, cartoon character villains, and an awful 3rd act. The green goblin was horrible, and the entire film felt like setup for the next one. I was expecting much more from Marc Webb here in this film. I even liked the first one. It felt so familiar to Sam Raimi's 3rd film in his trilogy. If they plan on having this franchise work they need to do something different.     MY SCORE: 4.5/10

1. Transformers 4
Transformers 4 felt like a terrible nightmare that would never end. I can honestly say that I was entertained with the first three films. Not good movies, but they served there purpose. Transformers 4 is almost a parody of itself. An absolute joke of a film. Mark Wahlberg is surely just cashing it in here as the protective father/superhero. When you have a scene with Marky Mark cracking open a bud light and taking a swig in the middle of an action scene; you know it's bad.            MY SCORE: 3.0/10

My Top 5 Action Films of 2014

5. Fury
I was pleasantly surprised with Fury. There wasn't much in terms of story, but the performances more or less made the film for me. Nobody was going for likability. In fact most of the characters are despicable, at least at first. The action was intense and real. The tank battles were some of the best things I've seen this year in film. Overall, Fury is an exciting film that thrills but still manages to just be a run of the mill war film.               MY SCORE: 7.5/10

4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I'll be blunt in saying I wasn't a huge fan of the first Captain America film. In fact I think it might be one of my least favorite marvel films. So going into Cap 2 I was very skeptical in whether I was going to like it or not. This film really took me by surprise. It was a refreshing super hero film that included some great spy like espionage bits. It wasn't the predictable bore that the first movie was. This time around Chris Evans gets a chance to breath as the character and can stand on his own as the captain. Scarlet Johannson and Samuel L Jackson are both great in it as well. I loved this chapter in the captain america story. I am definitely excited for the third movie.                                                                               MY SCORE: 8.5/10

3. X-Men: Days of Future Past
I was almost completely done with the X-men franchise. I really liked the first two movies very much. I even liked that prequel First Class, but there was too much BS with the other x-men films. Days of Future Past has without a doubt regained my attention in the franchise. This film has everything you want in an X-men movie. The time travel elements were cool and added some depth to the story. The entire star studded cast give memorable performances as the popular mutants and there younger selves. Overall X-men: Days of Future Past had me entertained from start to finish. Oh, and I think that Quicksilver scene was easily one of the best things I've seen this year.                                                                                                                 MY SCORE: 9.0/10

2. Guardians of the Galaxy
What is there to say that hasn't been said a million times of the huge mega Marvel hit. Guardians has such an incredible blend of Sci Fi swagger and blockbuster eye candy. This movie was certainly like crack to me when I first saw it. I couldn't get enough of it. The characters, the special effects, and the soundtrack were all out of this world great. Chris Pratt is most certainly a household name now because of this film. He should be too. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy was all I could have hoped for and much more. I had big stupid smile on my face the entire film.
                                                                                                                             MY SCORE: 9.5/10

1. The Raid 2
In terms of action nothing even comes close to The Raid 2. I couldn't stop thinking about this movie for a long time. Easily some of the best fight choreography I have ever seen in an action film. The action was filmed incredibly well too. No shaky camera, no frantic editing. The shots just let the action breath. The action mixes well with the godfather like story. I can't recommend this movie enough if you like action in any way. It is a foreign movie, but most of the film is balls to the walls action anyway so it didn't distract me at all. I loved The Raid 2 and it easily wins my number 1 spot as my favorite action film of 2014
                                                                                                                              MY SCORE: 9.5/10

My Top 5 Most Disappointing Films of 2014

5. Snowpiercer
To me this film felt lacking in substance. None of the characters really stood out. The concept was really interesting and fun to watch, but I couldn't help but think of the massive plot holes, boring characters, and lackluster presentation at times. I am very surprised to see it on many Top 10 lists, as I haven't really been on the fence about a movie this commercially liked in a very long time.
MY SCORE: 6.0/10

4. Dumb and Dumber To
I really wanted to love this movie. I can't stress enough how many times I have watched and enjoyed the original Dumb and Dumber. It will always be a film that can put a smile on my face. Needless to say that I wasn't counting on the sequel to top the original. I didn't hate the movie, in fact I laughed out loud a few times in it. It just wasn't enough to keep me entertained throughout. Dumb and Dumber To was just a film that felt like it came out 20 years to late.
MY SCORE: 5.5/10

3. The Rover
The Rover was a film that I anticipated being one of my favorites of the year. Everything pointed to it being a great film. Crazy Guy Pierce. Check. Beautiful cinematography. Check. Post apocalyptic tale. Check. Style wasn't the problem. Unfortunately I felt that the film lacked in substance and failed to resonate with me in any way. This makes the list because I thought David Michod's last film Animal Kingdom was fantastic. I was ultimately bored with The Rover.
MY SCORE: 6.0/10

2. Godzilla
Godzilla was hit or miss with people. Some praising its restraint in showing the big beast, and others calling it unbearable to watch because of the human characters. I can relate to both sides, but I was really disappointed in everything besides the actual Godzilla bits in the movie. The human elements really took me out of it, and a certain key character being killed off almost comically too soon. I hoped for more of a payoff in the end, but I have faith in the sequel.
MY SCORE: 7.0/10

1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
I was hoping that this was the Spider-man movie that brings me back. Not only did it fail to do that, it pushed me even further away from ever liking this franchise again. I really disliked this film in almost every way. The weirdly comical (Batman & Robin like) villains were eye rolling bad. The Amazing Spider-man 2 suffers from the same issue that plagued the 3rd Raimi film. There was too much going on, and not enough to care about.
MY SCORE: 5.0/10

Umm Hello?

Hi, you probably don't remember me, but I used to write movie reviews. It's been a very long time since I have, but that doesn't mean I've stopped going to the theaters. The blog just got to the point where it looked too convoluted. There was too much being thrown at the reader, and to be honest I have been too busy to even fix it. A few days ago I thought about some of the great films I've watched this year and it got me thinking I should probably wright something about it. I've watched some fantastic films this year, and some really bad ones. So I've decided to continue with reviews, and i'm starting with my Top 10 Films of 2014. I am also interested in doing a Top 5 Worst, Top 5 Most Disappointing, Top 5 Comedies, and Top 5 Action Films.
